A Quick Update & Happy Holidays!

I have not fallen off the face of the earth. I appreciate all the emails asking if I was ever going to blog again. My answer is YES! However, I blog what I live and I don't live to blog. So, blogging has taken a back seat to the following:

1. I am moved! As I type this the boxes are no longer in the bedrooms, living room & kitchen. I can't say this for the other rooms in the house & we still have not been able to park a single car in our 3-car garage.

2. The pool has been started.

3. The Christmas tree is up & decorated. The shopping is done ;)

4. No Christmas cards this year. I'm only sending cards out on even years (at least that's my story!).

5. Some new recipes I am going to be trying this weekend: BLT Dip, Meatballs, Bacon Wrapped Lil'Smokies, Cranberry Avocado Salad.

6. I have been glued to this blog & on my knees praying.

7. I have a "much needed I am too old to move" massage scheduled for Sat.

Merry Christmas & Happy Holidays. I will post pictures of the new house soon and promise to be back to blogging in the new year.

French Toast Bake using Refrigerated Cinnamon Rolls

INGREDIENTS
1/4 cup LAND O LAKES® Butter, melted
2 cans (12.4 oz each) Pillsbury® refrigerated cinnamon rolls with icing
6 LAND O LAKES® Eggs
1/2 cup heavy whipping cream
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
2 teaspoons vanilla
1 cup Fisher® Chef's Naturals® Chopped Pecans
1 cup maple syrup

Garnish
Icing from cinnamon rolls
Powdered sugar
1/2 cup maple syrup, if desired

DIRECTIONS
1. Heat oven to 375°F. Pour melted butter into ungreased 13x9-inch (3-quart) glass baking dish. Separate both cans of dough into 16 rolls; set icing aside. Cut each roll into 8 pieces; place pieces over butter in dish.
2. In medium bowl, beat eggs. Beat in cream, cinnamon and vanilla until well blended; gently pour over roll pieces. Sprinkle with pecans; drizzle with 1 cup syrup.
3. Bake 20 to 28 minutes or until golden brown. Cool 15 minutes. Meanwhile, remove covers from icing; microwave on Medium (50%) 10 to 15 seconds or until thin enough to drizzle.
4. Drizzle icing over top; sprinkle with powdered sugar. If desired, spoon syrup from dish over individual servings. Serve with the additional 1/2 cup maple syrup.

I'm waiting on my boys to get back in town tonight. In the meantime, I baked all the sugar cookies in preparation of Max decorating them!

This is last years post (or actually I think 2009!!)...

I know that you have all seen this image. Well several years ago, my then almost 3 yr old, saw this image too. So, for 3 years now, we have been making these cookies. He loves it. After taking several batches to all the neighbors, the rest get packaged up and follow Max to school in the morning. Win-win.

Dressing Your Age

I'm in a predicament of sorts. I don't know how to dress any more. Seriously, all the money in the world can not find me something to wear.

How is an almost 40 year old suppose to dress? I want to be fun & trendy but still dress my age. I need something better than Forever21 but I'm not quite liking Coldwater Creek, Chico or Talbots yet.

Remember when it was simple and everything that Esprit put on the shelves you would buy? I use to love my Seventeen & Teen magazines. I would pour over every page and buy outfits similar in style. Now when I look at fashion magazines, nothing looks realistic. I feel like they have lost touch.

Now don't get me wrong, I still buy the occasional piece at Forever21 or Old Navy. I just want better quality. I want a brand I can call my own.

What do you wear? Where do you shop?

Ps. I think I am the only one in the world who does not like Anthropology for fashion.

Pss. Can an almost 40 year old wear boot socks?

Halloween Decor

I am not a seasonal decorator. I just can't justify spending the money on something that is temporary. I also hate the extra effort of "getting it out" & "taking it down". I know, I know...but this is how I roll.

This year because the little guy is so into halloween, I decided to throw caution to the wind & do a little Halloween decorating. I bought the rats & graves from the Dollar Store. Max made the garland ;)

I just kept it simple. The front entry & the mantle.

Cooking with a Budget and Time Restraints

I have finally succumbed to meal planning. I hate cooking but hate going to the store even more. Unfortunately, when you don't plan for your dinner, you end up at the grocery store almost daily (and let's not mention the spending without a plan!!).

So, here is my attempt to meal plan.

1. First, I wrote out the days of the week that I wanted to plan for. My list ended up being 9 days. On my list I made note of the days that Hubby was out of town or something was going on like an Open House or Soccer practice etc. I also organized any recipes that I would need. Also, do a quick check of what items you already have on hand (shop your pantry).

2. Second, I made a grocery list on another sheet of paper (or you can use the backside of your days of the week list. I made out my list so it would coincide with the layout of the store. Because faster shopping = a happier me.

3. I spent $141 for 9 days which included a magazine, assorted sodas, cookie mix, muffin mix, Starbucks drinks, drink boxes, lunch meat, 30 count frozen sausage patties (because this is all they had), Pilsbury crescents, 2 McCormick Season Mates & 3 boxes of flavored rice (I got suckered into a buy 2 get one free). What can I say, I am a sucker for impulse buying. I will work on this.

I kept my meal plan simple:
Thursday: Frozen Ravioli w/ veggies**
Friday: Hamburgers, Pool Side Salad & Chips
Saturday: Rice & Sausage
Sunday: Leftovers or something easy like soup & sandwiches**
Monday: Leftovers or something like a salad, cereal, whatever is easy**
Tuesday: Breakfast for dinner + assorted fruit
Wednesday: Frozen Pizza w/ Salad**
Thursday: Crock-Pot Fajitas w/ Chips & Salsa
Friday: Steak, Smashed Potatoes, Salad
**denotes no need to cook because of LIFE (hubby out of town etc.)!

Our goal is to have a plan, eat out less & hopefully waste LESS money.

Perfect for fans of both modern architecture and interior design, "Contemporary Houses" demonstrates how minimalist living needn’t be entirely sterile and without character. Though hip addresses near and around the best-known design capitals like London and Sydney are featured in the book, author Antonio Corcuera and assistant Cristian Campos wisely choose to emphasize more far-flung locations -- including Chile and South Korea -- where high-end homes can be assumed to be more of a rarity.

As thick and heavy as a college textbook, yet considerably more aesthetically pleasing, the end result is a 480-page, photo-filled compilation that serves as a global architectural compilation of sorts that brings together the finest examples of state-of-the-art residential designs found all over the world.

The book features text in four languages and is divided into four sections, designating each of the featured homes primarily based on their locations -- "Urban houses," "Country houses," "Isolated houses," and finally "Unique houses." The latter designation -- which Corcuera deems as "the concrete and tangible result of a spark of genius" -- is perhaps the most interesting for those without any pre-existing interest in residential architecture; each of the architects in each of the designs deliberately experiments with both form and function to create a home that looks, to both the discerning and untrained eye, truly groundbreaking.

As thick and heavy as a college textbook, yet considerably more aesthetically pleasing, the end result is a 480-page, photo-filled compilation that serves as a global architectural compilation.
Located in an agricultural area of Kansas, the industrial-looking Porsch Residence is completely built around energy consumption, but that doesn’t make its elegant facade and modular interior any less impressive. Spanish architect Vicens Ramos’ House in Boadilla, not far from Madrid, imitates a geode and plays with stark geometry right down to its granite cave-like indoor pool.

Undoubtedly a highlight of the "Urban" section, David Adjaye’s austere-looking Electra House is able to solve an oft-cited problem of many city dwellers -- the lack of natural light -- with skylights and a glass-encased room. From the abstract-looking Caesar House (located near Munich) to the breathtaking House In Honda (which incorporates structural elements of an earlier home in a Colombian town), the "Country" section offers new twists on tried-and-true second or summer homes -- though these examples seem better suited to hosting a gallery exhibition than a backyard barbecue.

Though the high-quality photographs make "Contemporary Houses" perfect for coffee table book designation, the text itself (printed in English, German, French and Dutch) could use some improvement. Perhaps opting to let the full-color shots ad floor plans speak for themselves, the author’s thoughts are usually limited to small captions that offer little in the way of a comprehensive overview for each house.

Still, in "Contemporary Houses," Corcuera proves that, yet again, a man’s house is truly his castle. The sleek, uber-modern homes featured may not suit everyone’s tastes (I found myself longing to watch an episode of "This Old House," or any program emphasizing historic restoration over cool minimalism after reading) but the volume is nonetheless a stunning tribute to some respectable achievements in residential design.

Embellishing Wellies (Rain Boots) with Ribbon

Nothing would make me prouder than to tell you I have nothing better to do than embellish my rain boots but this would only be a half truth. The whole truth is that I have these really large calves and ~~no boots in the world~~ boots do not fit me. It's a terrible cross to bear.

So, in comes getting creative. I found these rain boots at Walmart for ~$25, the grommets came from Hobby Lobby (buy more than you think you will need) and I had the ribbon. Any kind should work as well as a scarf, fabric strips etc. Be creative!

Step 1: Cut the boot as deep as you need it. Right down the center.

Step 2: Add the grommets per the instructions on the package. You might can buy more industrial grommets than the ones I bought. These little guys felt flimsy and were not the easiest to work with, hence the buy more than you think you will need.

Step 3: Thread your ribbon & tie a bow.

Step 4: Enjoy boots that fit over your calves & have personality!

Now, if I could just get some rain!

2 Projects For the Birds!!

The first project makes these cute little suet feeders. I changed up the recipe a bit based on some others feedback. I did not have any problem with my feeders staying together and we had 100 degree temperatures.

What you need:
twine
muffin tin or similiar
2 - 1/4 ounce gelatin packets (unflavored)
2 cups of bird seed
6 T + 2 T water
Spray Oil
straws

To make a batch, bring 6 tablespoons of water to a boil. Empty two 1/4-ounce packages of unflavored gelatin (I used the Knox brand) into 2 tablespoons of cold water in a large bowl. Let the gelatin sit for 1 minute, then add the boiling water and stir for 2 to 3 minutes or until the gelatin has dissolved. Next, stir 2 cups of your favorite wild birdseed into the gelatin, mixing thoroughly.

Let the mixture set for a few minutes, then stir again. Repeat this process a few times, if necessary, allowing the seed to absorb the liquid. Spray the pan oil spray.

Spoon the seed mixture into your pan and place a straw through the center for twine placement later.

Place the pan in the freezer and let them set for at least 3 hours. Remove the wreaths from the molds by inverting the pans and tapping along the bottoms.

Allow the wreaths to air-dry overnight. Finally, pull out the straws and thread colorful ribbon or twine around your wreaths and hang them outside in a protected spot, such as under an awning or eaves, where the rain won’t melt them.

What you need:

1 liter plastic bottle w/ top

2 wooden spoons

bird seed

eye hook

twine

Start by drawing a 1/2-inch asterisk on the side of a clean 1-liter soda bottle, about 4 inches from the bottom. Rotate the bottle 90 degrees and draw another asterisk 2 inches from the bottom. Draw a 1-inch-wide circle opposite each asterisk, as shown on bottle above. Use a craft knife to slit the asterisk lines and cut out the circles. Insert a wooden spoon handle first through each hole and then through the opposite asterisk, as shown. Remove the bottle cap and twist a small eye screw into the top of it for hanging. Finally, fill your feeder with birdseed, recap it, and use a length of twine to hang it from a tree.

Interview with Jean Nayar, Decorator and Author Extraordinaire!

I have some amazing insight into the world of decorating that you guys are going to love! A couple of weeks ago, I sent some interview questions to Jean Nayer. She has graciously answered and given us some fun information about decorating and some insight into her own personal style.

Take a minute to check out Jean's blog, The Happy Home Workshop. Then come back here and read my interview with her. She is a fantastic decorator (& author!) and Wednesday I will be reviewing her newest book, The Happy Home Project.

{My Questions in Red, Jean's Answers in Black}

1. When did you first become interested in design & architecture?

As a child growing up in Minnesota. My parents worked with a female architect to design my childhood home. Houses designed by architects were rare in the rather small town where I grew up, but those designed by female architects were even rarer at that time. My father made a point of showing me the subtle design details that she included in our prairie-inspired home. My parents also regularly journeyed all over the country with my brothers and sister and me to visit most of the nation’s landmark structures and notable gardens and parks, which piqued a lifelong love of good design.

2. What is your favorite style?

I don’t really have a favorite style, but I do gravitate toward classical structures with symmetrical floor plans, and I also like the simplicity of International-style buildings. When you start in a structure with a solid foundation, you can layer in elements of any style to craft a mix that expresses your personality. I also lean toward furniture with clean lines like Scandinavian modern or French Empire and Directoire pieces.

3. What is your favorite room in your house?

Our double-height living space that overlooks a massive linden tree as well as the Hudson River and the Statue of Liberty.

4. What has inspired you as a designer?

The work of other talented designers, such as Mariette Himes Gomez, Vicente Wolf, Victoria Hagan, Thomas O’Brien, Brad Ford, among countless others. I am also fascinated by elements of other cultures, such as Indian textiles, Japanese teacups, and Mexican folk art, which I like to gather on my travels and then find places for in my home. They have the ability to transport me.

5. What are your favorite decorator magazines, books or design blogs?

I like House Beautiful, Elle Décor magazines, Lonny and Trad Home online magazines, and Remodelista and My Marrakesh blogs to name a few.

6. What type of projects are you currently working on?

I am working on decorating an apartment in the Visionaire, an eco-friendly building in Battery Park City. I’m also branching out in new directions and have recently begun working as a real estate agent with Bond New York. So along with writing about improving the values of homes through design and renovation, I’m now also helping people to buy, sell and stage them, too.

7. How does being a "Green Professional" influence your work?

Sustainability is now a standard part of every choice I make. For example, I recently opted to part with a substantial number of old books that I’d be hauling around with me for years. Instead of tossing them, I sold them to Strand Books, a rare and used bookstore in Manhattan, which will resell and recirculate them into the world in an eco-friendly way. I’ve always been rather monastic in my approach to my home, tending toward minimalism, but being a green professional has made me even more so—I try to acquire only things I really need and love, and I part with things conscientiously to minimize my carbon footprint. Ideally, I’d like to become like a Net-Zero Energy home and create more energy, or give more to the world, than I consume.

8. If you were stranded on a deserted island, what one household item could you not live without?

What comes to mind first is my husband, but he’s not a thing, so I’d have to say my cotton/linen blanket, which was made by artisans for at Brahms/Mount Textiles on antique looms in an historic mill in Maine.

9. What do you see as some of the newest trends in home decorating?

A spirit of playfulness with more daring mixes of furnishings, colors and patterns.

To Die For Jalapeno Popper Dip Recipe

You will love this ooey gooey warm cheesy dip with just the right amount of spice. I served this dip with whole grain chips. Perfect!

Jalapeno Popper Dip
recipe via homemade by holman

2 (8oz) packages cream cheese, room temperature
½ cup mayo
½ cup red bell peppers, chopped
6 jalapeno peppers, seeded as desired for hotness, ribbed, finely diced
2 cloved garlic, minced
2 T cilantro, finely chopped
2 T lime juice
1 ½ cups Mexican blend shredded cheese
1 t Ancho chili powder
1 t ground cumin
1 cup panko bread crumbs

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a medium bowl, combine cream cheese and mayo. Add bell peppers, jalapenos, garlic, cilantro, lime juice, 1/2 cup shredded cheese, and half of the chili powder and cumin. Mix well to combine to a uniform mixture. Spread dip into a baking pan (I used a 1 1/2 quart oval Corningware baking dish but you can use any similar sized baking dish), smoothing into an even layer. Top with remaining shredded cheese, cover with bread crumbs and sprinkle with remaining chili powder and cumin. Bake approximately 30 minutes until cheese is hot and bubbly and the breadcrumbs are golden brown. Serve warm or at room temperature with tortilla chips.

Happy Memorial Day and My New Umbrella

Yes, the patio is still a work in progress. I have been so ~~busy~~ lazy lately and the last thing I want to do is pick up a paint brush. But in order for the patio to be done, the back portion must be painted. I hate painting chippy, dirty concrete.

I ordered an umbrella to help bring some additional shade to the back area. I can use the umbrella with my table or I can move it out with my stand to another section of the backyard. I am still looking at some additional patio furniture / garden furniture to complete my look. One bonus of blogging is that the fine people at www.everypatiofurniture.com sent me my umbrella for a blog post exchange. So don't ever let them tell you blogging is not lucrative. I think between the 3 years I have been blogging, I am averaging 1/2 cent a day on my monetary return but my return from the heart has been priceless!

Painting Metal Patio Furniture

I have this 15 year old metal patio set. Nothing special but I like it. Unfortunately, it is showing it's age and my neglect. I think it was once black or maybe a grayish-black but it had started to rust and deteriorate. I don't have a very good "before" picture that shows truly how bad the table looked but it was ugly.

I thought about spray painting the table but then I remembered my grandfather having some of his old patio furniture "dipped" or "powdered coated". So, I called my local auto paint repair store (I called Maaco). I guess any auto paint shop would be willing to help, so call around. I paid $100 to have the table painted black + 4 chairs. I could not be happier. It took 4 days. I delivered my table and picked it up.

So, the next time you have metal furniture to paint, consider calling a car auto body shop!

I had an electrical outlet added to the ceiling since my house is built on slab. This was way cheaper than busting up concrete and I don't have to drape electrical cords to the wall outlets.

*Sorry about the cat being in the photos, she is one of these cats that you don't mess with when they are relaxing. Unless you want to lose a finger or two!

Ikea Appliances

I have had several emails asking about my Ikea appliances. So, I thought that this warranted its very own post. When I was appliance shopping I went to Home Depot, Lowes, Sears & Best Buy. Home Depot & Lowes sometimes has great prices on appliances that have been returned or when a special order goes wrong etc. So, I was shopping the bargains. I found several great deals but then it was always a hassle. They would not load or deliver etc. etc. So I gave up and ventured over to Sears. I felt that the prices were high and deliver was going to cost me around $500. No shit. Also, several of the appliances I was interested in had to be special ordered. The salesmen work on commission and one day "my guy" would be there, the other day he would not. It was just a pain. This leads me to Best Buy. WHAT. A. JOKE. I don't know how these places stay in business. I waited around for a full hour for someone to help me. Then the manager sent the kid from cameras to help me. Yes, you guessed it. I walked out of there vowing to never return.

Enter IKEA. It was easy. It was fast. Everything is in stock. Deliver was $30 (including all the cabinets). It was priced right. After about a 15 minute wait, I had the BEST sales person in the world helping me pick my appliances.

Some facts about Ikea Appliances:
1. What's online is in the stores. In-stock. Can you say "same day!!!"?
2. Ikea appliance are made by Whirlpool.
3. Ikea appliances come with a 5 year warranty.

4. I did have an issue with my stove. The clock was not keeping time correctly. I called the 800 number that came with my paperwork (it was actually Whirlpool). They sent A&E appliance repair to my house within 2 days. The repair man had to order a part that arrived at my house within 2 days and he came back on the third day and replace the clock. It cost me nada.
5. It has been six months and my refrigerator water filter needs to be replaced (at least that is what the indicator light tells me). I am not sure where to buy one. I will have to research it but I am not worried.

My appliance costs:
1. Refrigerator $1399: This is counter depth. I dare you to find a refrigerator that is counter depth for this price.

(this is not MTV cribs and yes, I drink wine from a box. we are just classy like that.)

2. Dishwasher $649: I am telling you, you can fit anything and everything in this baby. I have never owned a dishwasher that can take this many dishes. My only complaints; for the money, I would expect it to be quieter and the silverware basket could be taller.

Built-in Microwave $649: I love the look of this little beauty. It's a little complicated to use. I have to post a cheat sheet inside the cabinet door above.

(that's the "cheat sheet" taped inside the cabinet door so I know how to operate this bad boy!)

Ceramic Glass Top Slide-in Range $799: I think the oven cooks a little high. But then again I tend to over cook everything anyway. But this is my story & I am sticking to it ;)

There you go. My 2 cents. I will forever shop Ikea appliance.

Catnip in the Garden

I could not figure out why my catnip was struggling. I've planted catnip before with great success but this time something was amiss.

Then I saw it.

Hummmm, this stuff smells good.

Oooooh, a little rub here and wait for it...

Ahhhh, the full body rub. I LOVE ME SOME CATNIP!!

Nam, nam, nam.

This is why my catnip looks pathetic. Oh well, off to buy more tomorrow.

We should all enjoy our garden this much!

Pioneer Woman's Fettuccine Alfredo

Well, I did it. I made it. Now excuse me while I run to Canada and back to work off the gazillion calories I just consumed.

I bought the best Parmesan Cheese Walmart carries ;)

I cooked my noodles to perfection and tossed with butter & heavy cream.

I served Pioneer Woman's Fettuccine Alfredo with this salad

and make sure you have a white sangria with fresh fruit.

I used my iPad as a cookbook. This was a first for me.

Would I cook this again? Probably not. Hubby liked it but this is not a meal that we eat often or even once a year. If I am going to eat Fettuccine Alfredo, Olive Garden does a better job and cleans up after.

It was a bad day.

My day started without breakfast. I then found myself at the grocery store around 10am. I had a long list of things to pickup. I hate grocery shopping and had waited till the last possible moment to go to the store. Up and down every aisle. Back and forth when I would accidently skip an item on my list. I even picked up prescriptions. One of the prescriptions had to be ordered, which meant another trip in my future. Everything was pissing me off at this point. Over an hour had passed. My cart was so full that I had my purse on my arm and two extra bags in one hand. A case of water, jugs of juice, soda packs....uugh, you name it I bought it.

My cart had a bum wheel as I rolled into the parking lot. I was getting more pissed by the moment. Finally, I make it to my car and lift open the back to start piling everything in. My car is a disaster. It looks like a 1st grader exploded in my car. Where in the heck was I going to put everything? I start thinking to myself, heavy stuff in first, eggs & bread in last. Drudgery. Pissery. I'm low energy and tired. Damn, why did I buy a case of water. Shit. Shit.

Then I hear it. A soft spoken voice. "Excuse me, Maam but I just ran out of gas and need to borrow a dollar."

I feel my face get red. I whip around and square off with this man. "Don't you fuck'n lie to me." I snarl. "If you need money then ask for it but don't fucking lie to me". I did not stop. I did not even take a breath. "Instead of asking me for money, why don't you do the gentleman thing and offer to help me unload this heavy water into my car?" He was stunned. I was stunned at what I had just said. Then I saw it. He blushed. His eyes looked away. I saw his expression turn to humiliation and embarrassment.

I had been brewing arrogance, superiority and frustration inside myself all morning. I had been LOOKING for the worst in everything and everyone. Instead of giving this man what he needed, I demoralized him and myself. I was trying to make myself feel better by making him feel worse. I decided at that moment I would no longer feed the wolf.

This story ends with me giving the man money and apologizing for my behavior. I decided not to watch the man walk away. I did not want to know if he was going to purchase gas for his car or alcohol for his body. It didn't matter anymore. What mattered was this:

Guns and Overcoming Fear (and Stupid)

I am afraid of guns. There I said it. I am not proud of the fact that I am afraid but I just am. My fear doesn't come from some kind of personal trauma but more the kind that comes from the unknown. After contemplating my fear and the root of the issue, I believe that I am afraid of not knowing how to use a gun, God forbid, I ever need to use a gun. You see, I have a gun in my home. I can't tell you if it's loaded or if the safety is on. I can't even tell you where the key is to unlock the box it is in. Now, that's just stupid and I don't do stupid.

So this is what I did to overcome stupid.

I signed up for their Women Only Training Class. Fourteen women came together to learn. Some had their own guns & ammunition, some (like me) rented everything. Some of the women had handled a gun before, others (like me) had not.

We spent 45 minutes in a class environment. We learned safety. We learned how to grip a gun.

We learned how to stand with a gun.

We learned how to load a gun.

We asked questions. We laughed. I wanted to cry. Seriously, I was that afraid.

The next half of the class was spent at the indoor range. I wanted to leave. I was sweating. I wore platform pumps and had this really big ring on my finger. What was I thinking? I was miserable.

It took me a moment before I could pull the trigger. I hate the element of surprise and I was anticipating the gun to act violently towards me. I did not want it to be loud. I did not want to look stupid.

I did it. I pulled the trigger and then again and again. Was it my Laura Croft moment? No. Did I start singing some AC/DC song in my head because I was a re-born bad-ass? No.

When the night was finally over, I spent a few moments in my car reflecting. I was proud of myself and I was going to continue with my training until I was comfortable.

why do 7 year olds always have to pose?

It started with these hand written notes, you know the ones with backwards letters and misspelled words. Yes, I started to find those kinds of notes taped to the outside of Max's door. It seemed everyday he needed to announce something; Open, Closed, No Mommy, No Dogs, etc., etc.

So this weekend, while he was out of town, I painted his door with a couple coats of chalkboard paint. I just taped off 4-inches around the border, lightly sanded with a sanding sponge and rolled on 4 coats. I love that every morning after he has left for school, I will pass by his room and he has left some kind of sweet note for me. I also love the fact that he is spelling on his own, writing and communicating. This is what us mothers call a win-win.

I decided to keep going with the "boys only" theme. I bought this wire curtain rod from Ikea and these painters drop clothes from Home Depot. I did not even hem them. I just folded them over and clipped. I am just lazy like that...

Yes, they need to be ironed. Yes, I tried but drop clothes are near impossible to iron. So it is, what I like to call, "good enough".

This is what his room looked like tonight before bed...

He told me that Mommy's would "Always be Allowed".

*I recommend using light-weight fabrics for this wire rod. My drop clothes are almost too heavy.

I got to thinking...You see, I have this very large white wall behind my very large TV, in this very small white room.

What do you think of this?

Finally!! It only took one freak out and 5 months to get the exterior of this house looking better.

I still have to paint the porch floor and add numbers to the front door. I still would have liked to have painted the brick but the HOA would not allow it. I am very pleased with how the vinyl siding painted up :) It's a start!

My Kitchen Before and After

This is the kitchen that Ikea built. Well, maybe not built but they at least provided all the materials! We did all the building.

The cabinets & appliances cost $6,200 (tax & delivery). The counter top was around $62 linear ft. I believe the flooring was around $4-5 sq. ft.

I will be out of town next week on spring break but as soon as I get back I will post the exterior before and afters.

Crabby Patty Cupcakes

I can't bake. Really I can't. However, little man has been begging for these Crabby Patty cupcakes and today is big man's birthday. Unfortunately, big man is in Dubai on business, so we celebrated with him in spirit ;) Any excuse to eat a cupcake, right?

I will say that these can be made to look a lot prettier. I just don't have the skills or patience.

My L'Auberge Weekend in Review

What is 140 miles away from Houston, TX? What feels worlds away from Houston, TX? What can give you a much needed break from your life? Yes, you guessed right. L'Auberge du Lac Casino and Resort.

Byron and I took off around 4pm on Friday. We did not go directly to the resort because we needed to drop Max off at his babysitters for the weekend. This added a good hour to our trip. Houston rush-hour on a Friday can be a Bitch. We rolled into the resort around 8:30pm, hungry and tired. This is what greeted us (after Valet parking because we new we would not be seeing our car again until check-out):

My new favorite cocktail (mixed berry martini) from the Ember Grille & Bar. Cindy was our exceptional server so be sure to ask for her. This was by far one of the best meals I have eaten in awhile. In fact, we ate at Ember's both nights.

I am not sure on the theme of the casino. It was western, Texan, lodge, all rolled up into one. Think cattle paintings, Lincoln Logs, browns, iron work, antler chandeliers and bears. Not my favorite of themes. I am partial to lighter and brighter but the casino does pull off the decor without being hokie. One of the things that does stand out more than anything else is how nice the employes are at this resort. Everywhere we went, we were greeted with smiles and offers of assistance. Everyone was incredibly approachable.

Our Room:

Our room was simple (#555). Good bed, linens and pillows. Most importantly the room was cold and dark. I had packed a small floor fan and was very happy to have it. The doors are very heavy and you can hear slamming all night long. The fan (& alcohol) took care of most of the noise. The TVs are in need of updating to flat panel but we did not watch much TV. As always, there could be more electrical outlets. Our room had this small wet bar that maybe at one time contained a mini-bar/refrigerator. I am not sure on it's purpose now - other than looking dated and non-functioning. No robes or slippers.

The bathroom was also simple. I was surprised that there was not a tub, just a shower with a glass door. The shower was in need of a good scrubbing. There was mold in the grout that I was able to scrape with my fingernail (gross). Also, one of my pet-peeves is when a shower does not have a bench or ledge to prop up your foot for leg shaving and the toilets are crazy loud. All-in-all it was fine (I am just picky!).

Time Spent:
My favorite time was spent pool-side. Yes, pool-side. It was about 75 degree this weekend and the pool was heated. I was completely rejuvenated after a trip to the Spa (hands/feet/head massage) and several hours in the sun!

There was also food/drink service poolside (great strawberry daiquiris).

The casino floor is surprisingly large. Even so, smoke is thick and overpowering. I don't ever recall The Venetian or Mandalay Bay's casinos being this heavy with smoke. Also, the table limits are ridiculously high (nothing under $25). A poker room is suppose to be coming the 3rd quarter of this year.

We charged everything to the room for 2 nights and dropped about $1000 (not including what we lost gambling). This included 2 spa treatments, 2 dinners at Embers, pool side drinks/appetizers, room service breakfast, $30 straw hat, 2 bottles of water, 1 scoop of ice cream and 1 chocolate mousse.

Clothespin Apron ~One Yard Wonders~

If you like to sew quick, fun and easy projects...then buy this book. I reviewed the book last year and have enjoyed sewing from it! Today I made a clothespin apron for my new retractable clothespin. Please don't tip off my HOA. The clothespin is behind our fence, I promise you can't see it from the front of the house :)

The project only took one yard of fabric and 1 hour to complete (not including cut out time). Now go out and buy the book. You will not be disappointed.
